Build something that floats!

This weeks task is about creating something that floats!

Making things float must have air apart of the objects structure. Something called buoyancy; description of how afloat or buoyant something is.

What materials can be used to make things float? Wood is a perfect example as it has many little air pockets inside keeping it afloat. Some boats and canoes are made out of wood because it is reliable on water. However rocks are the opposite. They usually don't float because they lack air in them, materials like that are heavy and dense.

I can use anything that I can find in the house to create my floating invention, ANYTHING.

Once I have engineered my new invention I will need to test it!

I will Measure how far it will be able to sail and how much load it can carry before it sinks.

The material I used in the house is paper. The heavy objects I used in my experiment were marbles.

  1. Kia ora Hope,

Great job completing the Nanogirl activity this week!

I am so interested to see how the paper held the marbles, and how buoyant it was.

Could you please share the first file as
Anyone on the internet with this link can view
so that everyone can see your wonderful mahi.

    Ngā mihi,

Wow! This is an excellent post with your Nanogirl creation and test results!

The video editing was excellent, great job with the subtitles they were clear and I understood every step of your boat testing. Did it take long to edit the video?

Your boat held so many marbles! Far more than I was expecting. Even if it didn't look so healthy afterwards oops!

I wonder what you could make the boat with to make it more waterproof? That would be an interesting and innovative challenge.

Next time, you can embed the video into your blog, rather than posting a link. Click here to see how to do this.

I hope you enjoyed this activity. I can't wait to see your next blog posts and creative ideas.

      Ngā mihi,
      Lauren
