Seasonal Greeting Cards

A task posted on the 24/12/21 from the SLJ blog was to create a seasonal greeting card, they have also displayed a bunch of videos on a slide deck for ideas to make the cards. Before looking at making the cards I have taken a look at the History of Christmas cards

These are the cards I have made for this activity.

3 things that I have learned about the History of Christmas cards is that people have been sending Christmas greetings to one another for hundreds of years. The first recorded use for Merry Christmas was in a Christmas letter sent in 1534.

Modern Christmas cards can represent a collection of designs, from dramatic depictions of nativity to images of Santa Claus and of his reindeer's, or the scenery of winter nature. However modern technologies like sending emails, messages, or any online communication have taken a toll on Christmas cards. In spite of that many families and friends still find time to mail out cards to their loved ones.

Another thing that I have learned is that it is estimated that nearly two billion Christmas cards are sent out each year, and each household receives an average of approximately twenty cards each holiday season, which blows my mind now knowing that someone out there is sending out this many holiday cards each holiday. It's really nice and thoughtful that people out there prepare cards for many others to ensure happiness throughout the holidays.

Cicadas Do Maths

For this task I had to create a timeline of what I may be doing when I am 17, 34, 51, 68 and 85. I had to think about where I will be, how I might feel and what I might be doing.

The reason why I am doing this is because I have learned that Cicadas are able to do maths according to their life cycle and how they are able to prevent usual predator attacks by using the prime numbers. However this task is based on me for every 17 years of my life.

Below will show my timeline and the information about where I will be, what I could be doing and how I may feel.

17 - I will be a yr 12 still in college working towards NCEA lvl 2. I wish to surround myself with the people who are good and well behaved. I believe I will be studying hard to succeed and achieve my goals along the way, giving back to those who I owe, living the best and having fun. I hope to have learned how to drive and work a small job earning pocket money.

34 - I believe I will be in my first year working as a Cosmetic Surgeon usually earning between $72,000 and $124,000. Using the income I will pay off the fees. I wish to keep in contact with current friends at school and will totally keep in touch with my family. Hoping I will find a home that I can settle into before having my own little “Hope” family.

51 - Hopefully by then I will have a family of my own, supporting them along their way through life including my original. As I said before I believe I would be a Cosmetic Surgeon hopefully working in the private sector at the top will earn me up to 600,000 which will help me support my loved ones and myself with bills, mortgage, landmark, etc

68 - At this age I would want to make the most of being at a average age to be able to go around and have fun. Go overseas, travel, trips, hangouts or do things that will be memorable. Catch up with people or go out and explore more. I may have a partner to company throughout the activities and perhaps have my family/friends tag along.

85 - Around this age I would probably be looking after grandchildren. I would most likely be retired, resting and relaxing. I would feel like living the rest of my life enjoying and supporting my loved ones, wishing for the best until the end.

Bridge Builder

A task set for this week is about learning how to create a bridge using different shapes with any use of materials.

I needed to design and build my own bridge using geometry shapes such as triangles, arches and rectangles that spans about 30 cm.

Below will show a template that will display the before and after of the testing of my bridge and the explanations of some questions.

And Below this template will present a video of me testing how much load my bridge can carry.

Thank you for visiting my blog! Have a wonderful day :)

Build something that floats!

This weeks task is about creating something that floats!

Making things float must have air apart of the objects structure. Something called buoyancy; description of how afloat or buoyant something is.

What materials can be used to make things float? Wood is a perfect example as it has many little air pockets inside keeping it afloat. Some boats and canoes are made out of wood because it is reliable on water. However rocks are the opposite. They usually don't float because they lack air in them, materials like that are heavy and dense.

I can use anything that I can find in the house to create my floating invention, ANYTHING.

Once I have engineered my new invention I will need to test it!

I will Measure how far it will be able to sail and how much load it can carry before it sinks.

The material I used in the house is paper. The heavy objects I used in my experiment were marbles.

Watch my video to see my experience during this experiment!
